The first rule of Chuck Palahniuk novels is you don’t talk about…
I’m only kidding. Yes, Palahniuk broke onto the scene with his brilliant Fight Club. Like many, I’m ashamed to say that I saw the movie first and didn’t even know it was a book at the time. But every day I’m learning to do better. I’m a work in progress.
Anyway, upon reading Fight Club, I found myself loving it. It’s a little difficult to describe – but if you’ve read it yourself, you know – it’s just so unlike anything else I’d ever read before. Sure, it’s a book overflowing with male testosterone, but it also has this angst and this sense of urgency. Just reading it can leave you exhausted.
Once I read a book and enjoy it, I’m more inclined to check out other books by the same author. And that’s how I’ve been with Palahniuk’s work, too. To date, I’ve read seven of his novels and have enjoyed them all in different ways. But to me, the premise of this book is just insane. It’s one of those instances where I read the back of the book and thought, “Holy shit! I have to read this.”
In this story, Cassie Wright is a faded pornstar looking to break the world record by f- fornicating with 600 men in one session. She intends to go out with a bang, so to speak. Imagine a busy waiting room of naked men with numbers painted onto their torsos. There they wait until they are summoned for their fleeting moment with Cassie. But they’re not necessarily drawn in order. I suppose that would be too predictable.
The majority of this tale is told from the perspectives of three of the men in the waiting room. Known only by their numbers Mr 600, Mr 72 and Mr 137. They each have their own reasons for being there and their own distinctive voices that keep the narrative rolling along to its conclusion.
This is Palahniuk’s ninth novel, and was first published in 2008. I can imagine readers at the time being quite shocked by the content of this book. Western culture rarely praises women for sexually liberating themselves. In my research, I learnt that Palahniuk was inspired by Annabel Chong, a pornstar who engaged in over 250 sex acts with 70 men in 10 hours. The event, in 1995, was dubbed the World’s Biggest Gangbang. Of course, those numbers have since been dwarfed by the likes of Lily Phillips and Bonnie Blue. One must wonder if either of those ladies read this book and thought it was an instruction manual.
My Goodreads rating: ★★★★☆ (4 stars)

Thanks a ton for your post. I would really like to write my opinion that the cost of car insurance varies greatly from one policy to another, mainly because there are so many different issues which play a role in the overall cost. For example, the make and model of the motor vehicle will have a huge bearing on the price. A reliable ancient family car or truck will have an inexpensive premium than a flashy racecar.
